I would say this is probably the best RPG ever made, unless I'm forgetting something..
The villain in this game is called Lavos (the monster in the image). It is a parasite which came to earth from the heavens, in order to drain the planet's energy. Lavos came at the dawn of history and actually influenced the developpement of Earth's creatures throughout the millenias in order to make himself stronger. He eventually causes the apocalypse in the year 1999, leaving mankind in a state of suffering on a desolated planet. Unless, of course, you go back in time to do something about it!!!
I think the aspect of this game that really resonates with me, is the obvious anti-theistic theme, with Lavos (or god) as the main villain, a force that must be stopped at all costs. Another thing I really like is how the characters aren't fighting because they've been "chosen" by the crystals or the gods, or anything like that. They fight for themselves, their world, and for those they love; not for some "higher power". I think that's a great message that more people should apply to their life.
But besides all of that, at the core, this truely is a fantastic game. The characters and the plot are very compelling. The game looks great and is very detailed (much better than the FF games). The battle system is intuitive. The control doesn't feel restrictive like FF where you can only walk in 4 directions (and hey, I ain't dissing FF, it's great. I'm just saying this is better). And last but not least, the sound quality is fantastic. This game definitely deserves more than just a simple port... I just can't comprehend why Squarenix doesn't start milking this franchise for all it's worth, instead of sticking to Cloud Strife!!!
Bottom line, if you haven't played this game, get off Deviantart and go download it right NOW!
Oh, wow. That is one hell of a picture. It looks amazing, especially the glowing. I've never played the game (and simply don't have time, I've got about five games I've brought but not even taken out of the packaging yet) but it sounds and looks good.
yeah I know, but I didnt play it yet. It's the first game I want to play, when I get a PC that can emulate the playstation without making the games all crappy and slow. They should remake the first one though, and make it bigger and put more quests and whatnot.
This was one of my favorite RPGs, and I just liked everything about it (let's pretend the semi-sequel Chrono Cross doesn't exist, as it wasn't worthy of the Chrono name). I know it deserves more than an enhanced port on DS, but if you played the PS1 port you'd know it was probably necessary (the PS1 port is terrible).
I would like to see a new one, but sadly I don't think it would be a true successor do to the fact you need everyone involved to return (Sakaguchi is no longer at Square, and a lot of the original staff didn't work on Cross), and I'm afraid they'll let Tetsuya Nomura design the characters and give them all sorts of belts and zippers that will look out of place in the series (yes, I made fun of Nomura's designs FFVII and Kingdom Hearts fanboys, but don't blame me the designs look ridiculous).
